The present application discloses a method of operating a winch, an electric drive, a computer program product and a winch device, the winch comprising: a rotatable winch drum (20) for winding a windable medium (10); and an electric motor (30) operatively coupled to the winch drum. The electric drive (40, 41) configured to: drive the winch drum (20) by driving the electric motor (30) such that a tension of the windable medium (10) reaches a predetermined tension setpoint value or value range, and set a driving speed of the electric motor (30) to zero; and after the drive speed of the electric motor (30) is set to zero, driving the electric motor (30) at a predetermined drive speed so as to alternate the rotational directions such that the rotational directions change at a predetermined frequency.
