Abstract

The present invention provides a slot planar inverted-F antenna that can operate in multiple frequency bands and can be used with a small electrical ground plane. The antenna may have multiple planar stages, and the impedance of each stage (corresponding to a particular frequency band) may be independently adjustable. The antenna may have a self-supporting structure that does not require a separate frame. The antenna may further have right-handed circularly polarized hemispheres and left-handed circularly polarized hemispheres. Due to the hemispherical polarization, multiple antennas can be positioned orthogonally to each other without adversely affecting their performance, and thereby provide polarization diversity. The use of such antennas can reduce the number of antennas and associated components used in a wireless communication device, as well as reduce the amount of space required for the antennas.
