[0039] The techniques described in this document sense (eg, detect information about) travel signals by, for example, applying image processing to images of travel signals acquired, eg, using sensors onboard a vehicle, among other things. The image processing may include: extracting candidate driving signals in the captured image; classifying the candidate driving signals as real driving signals; and subsequently identifying relevant driving signals among the real driving signals. The state of the travel signal is also estimated. This technology, which we sometimes refer to as signage awareness, can be integrated into vehicle systems. A vehicle system may include or be implemented in a single electronic device (eg, a GPS device, a mobile phone, and a mobile computing device). The technology facilitates safer driving decisions for both manual and autonomous vehicles.
