The illumination device comprises a light source unit comprising a plurality of light sources emitting light beams with different wavelengths; a collimating lens which is used for collimating a plurality of light beams with different wavelengths output at different angles in the light source unit and emitting a plurality of parallel light beams withdifferent wavelengths; and a diffractive optical element which is arranged in the emergent light path of the collimating lens and is used for carrying out light path conversion on each parallel lightbeam with different wavelengths and emitting each parallel light beam parallel to the optical axis. According to the illumination device provided by the invention, the collimating lens and the diffractive optical element are used for carrying out light path conversion on the light beams emitted by the light source unit, so that each diffused light beam with different wavelengths is converted intoa plurality of parallel light beams which are parallel to one another and output in parallel to the optical axis, and the color and brightness uniformity of the illumination light beams is met. The invention further provides a projection display system which has the above beneficial effects.
