Problems solved by technology

Therefore, when the intensity of the signal light is very low, once the signal light passes through the EDF, the ordinary fiber amplifier cannot effectively change enough erbium excited by the high-intensity pump light to the ground state
Therefore, the overall amplification efficiency of the fiber amplifier is not high
That is, the energy of the pump light cannot be effectively converted into the energy of the signal light
Therefore, the improvement of small signal gain is limited, and the gain difference between signal light wavelengths is also large

Embodiment Construction

[0019] refer to figure 2 , the fiber amplifier that realizes small signal high gain of the embodiment of the present invention comprises: pumping laser diode (LD) 210, wavelength division multiplexer (WDM) 220, erbium-doped fiber (EDF) 230, coupler 240 and circulator 200 .

[0020] The pump LD 210 provides a pump light source for exciting the ground-state erbium ions in the amplification medium EDF to amplify the input signal light with low intensity.

[0021] The WDM 220 couples the input signal light and the pump light output by the pumping LD 210 into the optical fiber, and sends the coupled input signal light to the EDF 230 .

[0022] The EDF 230 amplifies the input signal light from the WDM 220 with the pump light that pumps the LD 210 , and amplifies the feedback signal light returned from the coupler 240 into the EDF 230 .

[0023] The coupler 240 is a 1550 nm 50:50 coupler connected in the form of a loop reflector and reflects the incident signal light amplified in ...

Abstract

An optical fiber amplifier for achieving high gain of a small signal, including a pump laser diode (LD) for applying pumping light to amplify weak incident signal light, a wavelength division multiplexer (WDM) for coupling the incident signal light and the pumping light output from the pump LD into an optical fiber, a fiber amplification medium, a coupler with a loop mirror and a circulator in front of the WDM. Therefore, high gain of a small signal can be achieved in the entire wavelength range between 1530 nm and 1560 nm, and the difference in gain between wavelengths can be remarkably narrowed compared to an existing method using an EDF having the same length as the EDF used in the optical fiber amplifier.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to an optical fiber amplifier, in particular to an optical fiber amplifier which uses an optical fiber coupler connected in the form of a loop reflector to improve the gain of low-intensity small signals. Background technique [0002] In the field of general long-distance communication repeaters, the traditional optical communication relay is carried out in this way: convert the weakened optical signal into an electrical signal, amplify the electrical signal, and then convert the amplified electrical signal into light signal. This relay method greatly increases the size of the relay amplifier system, depending on the transmission rate. Using an optical fiber amplifier that amplifies optical signals as a repeater can overcome the above problems and effectively amplify optical signals. [0003] One of such optical fiber amplifying repeaters, erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), is attracting attention as a new generation optical r...
