The vehicle periphery monitoring device includes: a side rear imaging unit that captures an image of the side rear of a vehicle; a rear imaging unit that captures an image of the rear of the vehicle; a detection unit that detects objects present in a side-rear overlapping region overlapping the rear image captured by the rear imaging unit in the side-rear image captured by the side rear imaging unit, and a rear overlapping region overlapping the side-rear image in the rear image; a determination unit that determines whether or not the objects detected by the detection unit include a specific object that is visually confirmed only in either a side-rear overlapping region in the side-rear image or a rear overlapping region in the rear image; and a display control unit which, when it is determined by the determination unit that the specific object is included, superimposes a specific object display image corresponding to the specific object in a rear image or a rear image on the side where the specific object is not visually confirmed, and displays the image on at least one display unit provided in the interior of the vehicle.
