Problems solved by technology

However, polymeric materials generate large amounts of smoke when burned, which is undesirable and difficult to pass compliance tests such as UL2043: Fire Test for Thermal and Visible Smoke Emission (UL2043 Fire Test)
[0004] Due to commercial costs in the rest of the market, it is not practical to design enclosures in metal alone to pass the UL2043 fire test

Abstract

The embodiment of the disclosure relates to a fire shield for a variable frequency drive enclosure. The fire shield enclosure makes use of a set of external metal shields that can be attached to a wall-mounted variable frequency drive (VFD) in the field either before or after the VFD has been installed for the purpose of providing adequate protection from a fire as defined by a UL2043: Fire Test for Heat and Visible Smoke Release (UL2043 fire test). The fire shield enclosure pertains to a VFD, wherein a polymer material may be used as an integral part of its enclosure housing.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to variable frequency drives, and more particularly to fire shields for variable frequency drive enclosures. Background technique [0002] A variable frequency drive (VFD) is a motor controller that drives a motor by varying the frequency and voltage supplied to the motor. Other names for VFDs are variable speed drives, variable speed drives, frequency modulated drives, AC drives, micro drives, and inverters. [0003] Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) typically use polymer materials for a portion of the VFD's housing due to their cost, weight and aesthetic advantages. However, polymeric materials generate large amounts of smoke when burned, which is undesirable and difficult to pass compliance tests such as UL2043: Fire Test for Thermal and Visible Smoke Emission (UL2043 Fire Test). [0004] Due to commercial costs in the rest of the market, it is not practical to design enclosures in metal alone to pass th...
