Problems solved by technology

However, in use, coupling the cannula and / or guide to the head assembly and ensuring proper alignment of the cannula and / or guide to the handle can be challenging, especially with direct visualization of bone screws in case of damage
Clinically, this can hinder intraoperative stability, interfere with surgical workflow, and increase the number of surgical steps
Additionally, since the cannula and / or guide serve as an alignment guide for cement delivery, insufficient coupling with the head assembly and / or misalignment with the shank of the bone screw can result in cement leakage or Cement Delivery Shaft Failure

Abstract

Instruments and methods for delivering bone cement are disclosed herein. In one exemplary embodiment, the instrument includes a cannulated bone screw having a head that is configured to be received within a rod receiver and a shank extending distally from the head and configured to extend distally from the rod receiver, a cannulated shaft having a distal end configured to extend into the shank of the cannulated bone screw and a proximal end configured to couple to a bone cement delivery system, and a retaining sleeve disposed around at least a portion of the cannulated shaft. The head of the bone screw has proximal and distal recesses therein, and a distal end of the retaining sleeve is configured to couple to the proximal recess.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention provides devices and methods for delivering bone cement to bone screws. Background technique [0002] Bone screws such as pedicle screws may be used in orthopedic surgery to secure bone during healing, fusion or other processes. In spinal surgery, for example, bone screws may be used to secure spinal fixation elements to one or more vertebrae to rigidly or dynamically stabilize the spine. [0003] In many cases, especially in spinal surgery, patients may have reduced or osteoporotic bone mass, which reduces the number of bone screws purchased in such bone structures. As a result, this can interfere with the stabilization of the vertebrae and can lead to loosening and pulling out of the bone screws. To improve bone screw fixation, bone cement can be introduced into the bone adjacent to the bone screw. [0004] Bone screw augmentation typically uses cannulated / holed bone screws to inject bone cement into the bone structure that h...
