Embodiment Construction

[0024] Figure 1 illustrates a vacuum interrupter 1 . The vacuum interrupter 1 includes a ceramic tube 3 which together with end caps 5 and 7 forms a vacuum-tight enclosure 9 . A fixed contact 11 is mounted on a fixed electrode 13 , the fixed contact 11 extending through the end cap 5 . A movable contact 15 is carried by a movable electrode 17 and extends through the end cap 7 . The bellows 19 forms a seal between the end cap 7 and the movable electrode 17 while allowing the movable electrode 17 to move radially to make the movable contact 15 contact and separate from the fixed contact 11 . The fixed contact 11 and the movable contact 15 form a detachable contact 21. When the detachable contact 21 is closed, the current flow between the fixed electrode 13 and the movable electrode 17 can be realized. The axial movement of the moving electrode 17 makes it possible to interrupt the current flowing through the vacuum interrupter when it separates. The movable electrode 17 separ...

Abstract

The tubular vapor shield of a vacuum interrupter is secured to the ceramic by a shield mount which includes a split ring seated in a circumferential groove formed in the inner surface of the ceramic. The tubular vapor shield is secured to the split ring by a connection which includes a circumferential flange brazed to the shield and a braze ring which is wedged in an annular gap between the flange and the vapor shield and which melts when heated in a vacuum oven to braze the split ring to the vapor shield and the flange. In another embodiment, the flange has a radial outward rim which seats on the split ring. In an additional embodiment, the connection between the split ring and the vapor shield includes a circumferential shield groove in the outer surface of the vapor shield in which the split ring is also seated and optionally secured by a braze. In yet another embodiment, an additional split ring seated in a circumferential groove in the outer surface of the vapor shield is brazed to the split ring seated in the groove in the ceramic.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates to vacuum interrupters that provide protection in electrical circuits. In particular, the present invention relates to an apparatus and method for mounting a vapor shield inside a ceramic insulator used to form a vacuum-tight enclosure in a circuit interrupter. Background technique [0002] Vacuum interrupters generally have a tubular ceramic member with an end plate covering its end to form a vacuum envelope. A fixed contact mounted on the first electrode extends through one end cap in the vacuum-tight enclosure, and a movable contact mounted on a movable electrode axially slides through the other end cap, thereby A pair of separable contacts is formed, and the pair of separable contacts are separated and closed by the movement of the movable electrode under the action of a mechanism located outside the vacuum-sealed casing. When the separable contacts are opened with current flowing through the vacuum interrupter, an ametal-v...
