The static contact 4 and the movable contact 5 are arranged in the circuit breaker chamber. Each contact is electrically connected to a respective line. Under normal conditions, the contacts 4, 5 are in contact with each other, and the current is conducted from one line to the other through the circuit breaker. If for some reason the current has to be disconnected, for example because of a short-circuit current caused by a fault, the moving contact 5 is quickly withdrawn from the stationary contact 4 . An arc first occurs between the contacts and is extinguished by the insulating gas flow as soon as the contacts have separated.
