The tool comprises at least two power islands electrically isolated in a manner that satisfies intrinsic safety requirements. In a specific embodiment, the improved intrinsically safe field maintenance tool implements a HART and Fieldbus Device Description Language (DDL). Improved field maintenance tools are used to maintain both two-wire and four-wire (ie, externally powered) field devices using these protocols.
