The method comprises the steps as follow: signals sent by the data device passing through the gateway are detected, and the media stream switching channel is switched into a T38 fax operation mode in event of detecting signals from a common facsimile device; the media stream switching channel is switched into a completed transmission operation mode in event of detecting signals from a high speed data device; and a signal detection is further implemented, and no processing is implemented in event of detecting signals from a CM-MODEM, while the media stream switching channel is switched into a T38 fax operation mode in event of detecting CM-FAX signals. The invention can switch the operation modes of the media stream switching channel quickly and accurately only by detecting signals from the data devices, thereby decreasing the complexity of device maintenance.
