Problems solved by technology

[0005] Inserting a resilient cylindrical foam plug or resilient tube into a weatherstrip generally as described above is a time consuming process which adds to the cost of production
Other problems can arise such as imprecise placement of the plug within the weather strip or axial displacement of the plug within the weather strip after insertion due to insufficient fixation of the plug

Embodiment Construction

[0020] Referring to FIGS. 2A and 2B , a hot melt adhesive spray gun 30 receives thermoplastic hot melt material from a heated hose 32 and dispenses the material 34 through a valve 36 having a discharge or injector 38 . Exit portion 38 may be configured to pierce bulb 12 with sufficient applied force. The discharge portion 38 may be formed in various ways such as by employing a needle-shaped discharge portion 38 or a spear or knife-like member connected to the discharge portion 38 to make piercing easier to achieve. It is also easier to inject the hot melt material 34 at the bottom of the bulb 12 near the carrier or groove 16 . The groove 16 is a relatively stiff component, so there will generally be more support in this area to allow the puncture to take place. Alternatively, a hole may be pre-formed through the bulb 12 such that the discharge portion 38 need only be inserted into the pre-formed hole before the hot-melt material 34 is injected.

Abstract

A method of manufacturing weatherstriping includes forming a compressible tubular member having a hollow interior. A curable liquid material, such as a thermoplastic hot melt, is injected into the hollow interior. The curable liquid is cured into a resilient plug to provide reinforcement to one or more locations along the length of the weatherstripping.

Description

[0001] This application is a continuation-in-part of now-pending PCT / US03 / 33896, filed October 24, 2003, based on now-abandoned Provisional Patent Application No. 60 / , filed October 31, 2002 422,671. The disclosure of each of these related prior applications is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. technical field [0002] The present invention relates generally to weatherstriping, and more particularly to a method of reinforcing portions of weatherstriping at areas of high stress concentration, such as bends within the weatherstrip. Background technique [0003] Many types of weatherstripping are employed in, for example, door, window, and entryway assemblies to seal the interior of a structure from the elements. For example, in automotive applications, weather stripping has been employed to form seals around windows, doors, trunks, and hoods of vehicles to prevent water and air from entering the interior areas of the vehicle at these locations. Such weatherst...
