Problems solved by technology

For example, wireless devices used in packet-based cellular wireless wide area networks such as GPRS networks typically have relatively limited bandwidth available, making downloading rich content slow, limited, and expensive
In contrast, wireless devices used in Wi-Fi networks (such as 802.11 networks) typically have greater bandwidth available, allowing relatively quick downloads of rich content

Embodiment Construction

[0013] First, refer to figure 1 , shows a block diagram of a communication system 100 according to at least one example embodiment of the present invention. The communication system 100 includes a mobile electronic device 10 ( figure 1 Only one is shown), a wireless wide area network (WAN) 110 and a wireless local area network (WLAN) 112 .

[0014] Wireless WAN 110 is, at least in some embodiments, a packet-based cellular network comprising a plurality of base stations 111 ( figure 1 Only one is shown in ), each base station 111 provides wireless RF coverage for a corresponding area or cell. Wireless WAN 110 is typically operated by a cellular network service provider that sells subscription service packages to users of mobile electronic devices. Wireless WAN 110 may be a number of different types of networks including, as non-limiting examples: Mobitex radio network, DataTAC, GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications), GPRS (General Packet Radio System), TDMA (Time Divi...

Abstract

A system and method for adapting data for transmission to a mobile electronic device (10) in a communications system (100) that comprises at least a first wireless network (110) and a second wireless network (130) having respective coverage areas wherein the mobile electronic device (10) receives data signals from a data conversion device (116) through one of the wireless networks (110, 130) based on a location of the mobile electronic device (10). Content that is destined for the mobile electronic device (10) through a selected one of the wireless networks is received at the data conversion device (116). The content is adapted at the data conversion device based on the selected wireless network (110, 130) and outputted for transmission over the selected wireless network (110, 130) to the mobile electronic device (10).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to content intended for delivery to mobile electronic devices. Background technique [0002] Wirelessly enabling a download experience between a mobile electronic device and a content source relies on a communication channel between the mobile electronic device and the content source. For example, wireless devices used in packet-based cellular wireless wide area networks, such as GPRS networks, typically have relatively limited bandwidth available, making downloading rich content slow, limited, and expensive. In contrast, wireless devices used in Wi-Fi networks (eg, 802.11 networks) typically have greater available bandwidth, allowing relatively faster downloads of rich content. [0003] Therefore, downloading the same content has a different experience on different networks. What is needed is a system and method to account for discrepancies in receiving content over different networks. Contents of the invention [00...
