Problems solved by technology

[0008] It is an object of the present invention to provide a method for reliably initiating or resuming a video-on-demand session without the above drawbacks of existing solutions, e.g. avoiding, inter alia, single points of failure, eliminating the need for complex and costly monitoring procedures, and eliminates the need to maintain session state information for recovery

Embodiment Construction

[0024] Figure 1 illustrates the interaction between a client device (eg set top box STB, video codec, PC, TV, etc.) and a video server 102 during a video on demand delivery session according to prior art. Typically, video on demand is initiated and managed using a control protocol. The industry standard control protocol for IPTV video delivery is the Real Time Streaming Protocol, abbreviated RTSP, which is defined in IETF RFC2326.

[0025] The control protocol server 111 on the video server side listens to the instructions on the control channel 103 between the client 101 and the video server 102, and depending on the instructions received from the client 101, instructs the video server 102 to perform basic video control operations, such as play, pause , fast forward, fast rewind, stop. A video streamer 112 will receive video programming from a video storage 113 which is for example integrated in the video server 102, but which can alternatively be separate network devices or...

Abstract

A method for initiating or recovering a media-on-demand session in a distributed media-on-demand network consisting of N streaming nodes (203 ... 204), the method having: a. a first step wherein a client device (201) sends a setup request (251; 256) to a highly available redirector device (221) to request initiation or recovery of said session; b. a second step wherein the redirector device (221) selects a streaming node (203; 204) for the session; and c. a third step wherein the redirector device (221) instructs the client device (201) to use the selected media streaming node (203; 204) for that session. A further distinctive feature is that the client device (201) requests media delivery from the selected media-streaming node either from the beginning (for initiation) or from the last position.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to resilient video-on-demand streaming within a distributed network, such as video-on-demand streaming in a distributed video-on-demand (VoD) network. In such a distributed video-on-demand network, each of the N streaming nodes can stream or deliver on-demand media assets to a client device, such as a client's set-top box (STB). In this patent application, a stream node means an independent stream unit or a group of stream units optionally sharing the same content storage device or media resource service. Background technique [0002] Existing solutions for video streaming units to deliver reliable video-on-demand even in the event of a failure are based on the structure described above, where a streaming node consists of several video streaming units that share the same content storage and are A process is monitored, the software process commonly referred to as a resource manager, fault manager or cluster manag...
