Embodiment Construction

[0016] Referring now to the drawings, and in particular to Fig. 1, there is generally indicated at 11 an electronic thermometer constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention. The electronic thermometer includes a temperature control circuit or unit, indicated generally at 13 , sized and shaped to fit snugly in the hand H . A control unit 13 (broadly speaking "base unit") is connected by a helical wire 15 to a probe 17 (these reference numbers generally denote their objects). The probe 17 is designed to come into contact with an object, such as a patient, and to send a signal representative of the temperature to the control unit 13 . The control unit 13 receives signals from the probe 17 and uses these signals to calculate the temperature. Suitable circuitry for performing these calculations is contained within the housing 19 of the control unit 13 . The logic in the circuit may include a predictive algorithm for quickly determining the patient's fina...

Abstract

An electronic thermometer with a progress indicator. A control circuit of the thermometer performs at least one temperature calculation as a function of a detected temperature and generates a temperature signal representative of the temperature of a subject based on the temperature calculation. A progress indicator visually indicates progress of the control circuit in performing the temperature calculation.

Description

Background technique [0001] Electronic thermometers are widely used in healthcare to measure the body temperature of patients. A typical electronic thermometer has a thermistor or other temperature sensitive element contained within an elongated shaft portion of a probe. In one version, the probe includes a cup-shaped aluminum tip at its free end. The thermistor makes thermal contact with the aluminum tip inside the probe. When the free end of the probe is placed, for example, in the patient's mouth (or rectum or armpit), the tip is heated and a thermistor measures the temperature of the tip, thereby obtaining a measurement of the patient's body temperature. Additional electronic circuitry associated with these electronic sensor elements may be contained within the base unit connected by wires to the shaft portion, or within the handle of the shaft portion. The electronic component receives input from the sensor component to calculate the temperature of the patient. Thermo...
