Problems solved by technology

[0012] Yet another limitation of the implant system is that, for commercial reasons, many replacement parts are mass-produced
While advantageously reducing the cost of the implant, these systems are generally offered in a limited number of discrete sizes which will likely not be exactly the size required by the patient

Embodiment Construction

[0115] independent parts

[0116] Figure 1 illustrates one embodiment of a system 10 made in accordance with the principles of the present invention. System 10 is comprised of femoral replacement 12, tibial replacement 14, and patella replacement (not shown). The femoral replacement 12 includes a patellofemoral joint (PFJ) component 16 , a superior lateral condyle component 18 , a superior medial condyle component 20 , a lateral anterior / posterior femoral condyle component 22 , and a medial anterior / posterior femoral condyle component 24 . According to one embodiment (not shown), the superior condyle component and the anterior / posterior femoral condyle component are provided as a single component. Tibial replacement 14 includes medial meniscus component 26 , lateral meniscus component 28 , and tibial bearing component 30 .

[0117] By segmenting the replacement into superior and anterior-posterior medial and lateral, PFJ, meniscus, and tibial bearing components, the system ...

Abstract

A knee replacement system provides a knee implant that may be used to more accurately replicate the diameter of a natural knee. In one embodiment, a patellofemoral component is connected to the posterior portion of a condylar component by screws that pass through the femur allowing the patellofemoral component and the condylar component to be torqued against opposing sides of the femur. Two additional screws are used to connect the patellofemoral component town anterior portion of the condylar component. A gap may be left between the patellofemoral component and the anterior portion of the condylar component if needed to provide precise replication of the diameter of the natural knee from the patellofemoral component to the condylar component.

Description

[0001] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application No. 60 / 535,967, filed January 12,2004. field of invention [0002] The present invention relates generally to prostheses for human joints, and more particularly to prostheses for knees. Background of the invention [0003] Total knee replacement (TKR) procedures and component systems for replacing the compartment of the knee in a total replacement procedure are well known. Typically, the surgery involves resection of the distal end of the femur, upon which a femoral component can then be fitted. The femoral component replaces the lateral condyle, medial condyle, and patellofemoral portion of the femur because one or more of these areas of the knee are diseased and no longer durable or provide the patient with an adequate range of motion. [0004] In a TKR procedure, the proximal end of the tibia is also resected so that the tibial component can be mounted on the tibia to receive the lateral and medial con...
