[0123]The antimicrobial efficacy of the medical dressing and sponge has been investigated. Such tests simulate the use of the dressing or sponge in practice and are based upon the visual observation of microbial activity on growth media placed in contact with the inventive medical dressing or sponge containing a determined amount of microbes. The tests are generally conducted by placing a sample of the antimicrobial agent containing dressing or sponge in contact with growth medium, adding a small volume of microbe containing aqueous solution to the medical dressing or sponge, and incubating the test samples for definite time periods and under controlled temperature and environmental conditions. Following the end of the pre-determined time period, the growth medium is visually observed to determine the extent, if any, of microbial activity or growth on the medium.
