During cardiac wall tissue ablation with an RF catheter, the observation of an 8 to 12 ohm drop in the tissue impedance is indicative of the production of a transmural lesion. Due to a magnetic catheter's ability to stay in the same position throughout the cardiac cycle and the consistency of forces applied throughout the cardiac cycle, the impedance measurement from the distal electrode of the magnetic catheter is uniquely useful in determining the achievement of a transmural lesion. The use of this impedance measurement during ablation with a magnetic catheter can thus be used as an indication of when the ablation has achieved a successful treatment endpoint. An RF generator's impedance measurement along with knowledge of the navigational state of a magnetic catheter can thus be used to control the delivery of energy for the purpose of delivering only as much RF energy as is necessary to achieve a clinically effective lesion and to stop RF energy delivery prior to the onset of an adverse event.

In a first embodiment, the dimming system comprises a first non-absorbing polarizer, a variable polarization rotator, a second non-absorbing polarizer and a heat absorber. The first non-absorbing polarizer receives light from a light source and passes the light of a selected polarization to the variable polarization rotator. The variable polarization rotator selectively rotates the polarization of the received light. The light passes from the variable polarization rotator to the second non-absorbing polarizer. The second non-absorbing polarizer passes only light of a second selected polarization. The light that passes the second non-absorbing polarizer is passed to the display, where it is used to illuminate the display. The system provides the ability to control the amount of light passed to the display by selectively rotating the polarization of the light with the variable polarization rotator.

Monitoring elements such as sensors and actuators are configured as a network, with groups of monitoring elements each controlled by a local controller, or cluster controller. A data bus interconnects each cluster controller with a router, forming a networked group of “monitoring clusters” connected to a router. In some embodiments, the router identifies particular clusters, and sends commands to the appropriate cluster controllers, instructing them to carry out the appropriate monitoring operations.
