Embodiment 1

[0050] A binary composition consisting essentially of 1,1,1,3,3-pentafluorobutane (HF365mfc) and hydrogen fluoride was mixed to form homogeneous mixtures with different compositions. The vapor pressure of the mixture was measured at 20.2°C and 40.2°C, respectively.

[0051] Table 1 shows the measured values of the vapor pressures of 1,1,1,3,3-pentafluorobutane and hydrogen fluoride at two constant temperatures of 202°C and 40.2°C as a function of the weight percent of hydrogen fluoride. From this data it was found that at 20.2°C the composition exhibited azeotrope-like behavior at approximately 6.8% by weight. It was further found in experiments that at 202° C., the maximum vapor pressure composition is about 4% by weight of hydrogen fluoride or about 4-8% by weight. It was further found in experiments that at 40.2° C., the composition at the maximum vapor pressure is about 8% by weight of hydrogen fluoride or about 4-10% by weight. From this example, it was determined tha...

Abstract

A process for removing 1,1,1,3,3-pentafluorobutane from a mixture containing 1,1,1,3,3-pentafluorobutane and at least one impurity is provided. The process comprises adding hydrogen fluoride to a mixture containing 1,1,1,3,3-pentafluorobutane and at least one impurity in an amount sufficient to form an azeotrope-like composition of the 1,1,1,3,3-pentafluorobutane and the hydrogen fluoride. Thereafter, the azeotrope-like composition is separated from the impurity.

Description

[0001] Referenced related application [0002] This application claims priority to Provisional Application Serial No. 60 / 295,049 filed June 1, 2001 in the US Patent and Trademark Office, which is incorporated herein by reference. field of invention [0003] The present invention relates to azeotropic and azeotrope-like compositions of 1,1,1,3,3-pentafluorobutane (HFC-365) and hydrogen fluoride. Background of the invention [0004] Fluorocarbon-based fluids have been widely used in industry for many purposes, including as refrigerants, aerosol propellants, blowing agents, heat transfer media, and gaseous dielectrics. Due to the questionable environmental concerns associated with the use of some of these fluids, it is desirable to use fluids with low or even zero ozone depletion potential, such as fluorocarbons ("HFCs"). It is therefore desirable to use fluids that do not contain chlorofluorocarbons ("CFCs") or chlorofluorocarbons ("HCFCs"). In addition, it is desirable to u...
