Problems solved by technology

Note that the location of the wedge adjacent to the end location of the arm does not provide support along the medial portion of the implant against the compressive forces exerted on the implant by adjacent vertebral bodies
Additionally, the expanding wedge can take up a larger portion of the lumen of the implant, reducing the implant's ability to accommodate bone growth promoting material

Embodiment Construction

[0022] To promote an understanding of the principles of the invention, specific language will now be used to describe the same with reference to the embodiments illustrated in the drawings. It should be understood, however, that the scope of the invention should not be limited and that variations and further modifications to the described devices and / or further applications of the principles of the invention may generally be made by persons skilled in the art.

[0023] see figure 1 , shown here is an intervertebral implant 20 according to one form of the present invention. The intervertebral implant 20 extends along a longitudinal axis L and generally includes an expandable body 22 and an expansion member 24 . As will be described in more detail below, the expansion member 24 is used to move the expandable body 22 from Figure 6 The initial structure shown transforms into Figure 7 The expanded configuration is shown in which the expansion of the main body 22 occurs general...

Abstract

An expandable intervertebral implant including a body having a longitudinal axis and including first and second axial walls spaced apart along a transverse axis, and first and second transverse end walls extending between and interconnecting the first and second axial walls. The intervertebral implant includes an expansion member co-acting with the axial walls to expand the body along the transverse axis.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to the field of intervertebral implants, and more particularly to an expandable intervertebral implant. Background technique [0002] Numerous attempts have been made to develop intervertebral implants to replace damaged or degenerated natural spinal discs and maintain the stability of the disc space between adjacent vertebrae, at least until arthrodesis is performed. The intervertebral implant can be solid, sometimes called a spacer or plug, or can form a hollow interior designed to allow bone ingrowth, sometimes called a fusion device or cage. The interior of the fusion device may be filled with bone elongation promoting substances to assist or promote bone growth into and through the device for faster and more stable bone fixation. [0003] Intervertebral implants of various types, shapes and configurations are known in the art. For example, one of the more popular designs includes an intervertebral implant ...
