Abstract

Method and apparatus (22) for separating os a pressurizes slurry. The components are separated in a hydrocyclone (24). A solids-enriched slurry exits the hydroclone (24) via an underflow outlet (28) and a solids-depleted slurry exits the hydroclone (24) through an overflow outlet (30) and passes into a products vessel (32). Fluid communication is provided between the products vessel (32) and the underflow outlet (28) so that gas circulate through the hydrocyclone (24). This gas circulation pathway (40) is a housing the apparatus (22) or a conduit between the products vessel (32) and the underflow outlet (28) . Pressure within the apparatus (22) is adjusted to operate the hydrocyclone (24) in balanced mode. When the slurry is derived from a high pressure and / or high temperature reactor (10) , the solid components include catalyst particles that are recycled to the reactor (10),and the apparatus (22) and reactor (10) are operated at the same pressure.
