Embodiment Construction

[0025] With specific reference to the accompanying drawings, first of all figure 1 , which shows a fiber optic device generally designated 10 for cross-connecting a single optical fiber 12 of a plurality of optical fiber ribbons 14 and 16 . These individual optical fibers are routed on the substrate 18 in a side-by-side array to form a plurality of first fiber optic ribbons 14 leading into one side or side 18a of the substrate. These fibers are recombined on the substrate to form a plurality of second fiber optic ribbons 16 which exit from the other side or edge 18b of the substrate. These fibers are routed in and out of tails 18c that protrude outwardly from the sides or edges 18a and 18b of the substrate. for figure 1 In the arrangement in , the first fiber optic ribbon 14 can be considered as the input ribbon, such as input at 14a, and the second fiber optic ribbon 16 is the output ribbon, as output at 16a. The input and output strips protrude from the edges 18a and 18b ...

Abstract

A fiber optic apparatus (10) and method are provided for cross-connecting the individual optical fibers (12) of a plurality of fiber optic ribbons (14, 16). A plurality of individual optical fibers (12) are routed on a flat substrate (18) to form at least one first fiber optic ribbon (14) leading onto the substrate and at least one second fiber optic ribbon (16) leading away from the substrate (18) to a terminating end of the ribbon. The individual optical fibers of at least the second fiber optic ribbon being routed in a predetermined sequence (20) from one side of the ribbon to an opposite side thereof. The individual optical fibers (12) at the terminating end (22) of the second fiber optic ribbon are cut-off . at different lengths in a predetermined pattern correlated to the predetermined sequence (20) of fibers in order to visually identify any fiber which is out of the predetermined sequence (20).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to the field of optical fibers and, more particularly, to fiber optic devices and methods for cross-connecting individual optical fibers in a plurality of optical fiber ribbons. Background technique [0002] Fiber optic lines are increasingly used in electronic systems where circuit densities are increasing and are difficult to configure with known wire circuits. Fiber optic lines are formed by a plurality of optical fibers carried by an insulator, and the ends of these fibers are interconnected with various forms of connectors or other optical transmission equipment. Optical fiber lines can range from simple optical cables to complex optical backplanes or flat optical fiber lines. formed by geometrically assembled multiple optical fibers. [0003] One type of fiber optic circuit is fabricated in a ribbon configuration in which rows of optical fibers are arranged in parallel side by side and are coated with a m...
