Problems solved by technology

While this approach can be implemented without increasing bandwidth and without transcoding, it is often not possible to accurately predict the coarse spectral envelope or formant of the high-band portion of the speech signal from the spectral envelope of the narrow-band portion structure

Embodiment Construction

[0058] Embodiments described herein include systems, methods, and apparatus that can be configured to provide extensions to narrowband speech coders to support transmission and / or storage of wideband speech signals with only about an 800-1000 bps (bits per second) increase in bandwidth. Potential advantages of such implementations include embedded coding to support compatibility with narrowband systems, relatively easy allocation and reallocation of bits between narrowband and highband coded channels, avoiding computationally expensive wideband synthesis operation, and to maintain a low sample rate for signals to be processed by computationally intensive waveform encoding routines.

[0059] Unless specifically limited by context, the term "calculate" is used herein to mean any of its ordinary meanings, such as calculating, generating, and selecting from a list of values. When the term "comprising" is used in the description and claims, it does not exclude other elements or ope...

Abstract

In one embodiment, a method of generating a highband excitation signal includes harmonically extending the spectrum of a signal that is based on a lowband excitation signal; calculating a time-domain envelope of a signal that is based on the lowband excitation signal; and modulating a noise signal according to the time-domain envelope. The method also includes combining (A) a harmonically extended signal based on a result of the harmonically extending and (B) a modulated noise signal based on a result of the modulating. In this method, the highband excitation signal is based on a result of the combining.

Description

[0001] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Patent Application No. 60 / 667,901, filed April 1, 2005, entitled "CODING THE HIGH-FREQUENCYBAND OF WIDEBAND SPEECH." This application also claims the benefit of US Provisional Patent Application No. 60 / 673,965, filed April 22, 2005, entitled "PARAMETER CODING IN A HIGH-BANDSPEECH CODER." technical field [0002] The present invention relates to signal processing. Background technique [0003] The bandwidth of voice communications over the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) has traditionally been limited to the frequency range of 300-3400 kHz. Newer networks for voice communications such as cellular telephony and Voice over IP (VoIP) may not have the same bandwidth constraints and may need to transmit and receive voice communications over such networks involving wideband frequency ranges . For example, it may be desirable to support audio frequency ranges extending down to 50Hz and / or all the way to 7 or 8kH...
