Problems solved by technology

[0010] For these reasons, currently available delivery systems for bifurcation injuries are limited in performance and in their ability to accurately axially position the stent and ensure that the sides or side holes of the stent face the side branches of the vessel.

Embodiment Construction

[0023] The present invention provides a delivery system for a bifurcated stent or other prosthesis having a main body and side branch portions or holes. The term "side branch portion" includes any opening or structure in the body which, when the body is in the main lumen or vessel, will align with the ostium of a side branch lumen or vessel. The side branch portion may be a simple hole in the form of a grid or slit in the prosthetic structure, preselected to align with the side branch vessels, but otherwise similar to other grid structures in the prosthesis , slit or similar. More typically, however, the side branch portion will be an enlarged or expandable lattice structure, which can be distinguished from the connecting or remaining structure of the prosthesis. In further embodiments, "side branch structures" include self-opening or balloon-openable peripheral structures for bridging the periphery of the side branch ostia after the prosthesis is opened in the main branch. ...

Abstract

Systems for aligning and deploying side branch stents comprise a catheter having a side branch sensor at or near a distal end thereof. Methods comprises rotating and axially transitioning the catheter until the sensor is brought into alignment with an opening to the side branch vessel.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to medical methods and devices, and more particularly, to medical devices for treating stenosis of vasculature at or near a bifurcation lesion. Background technique [0002] Stenting is a common medical procedure primarily directed at revascularization of narrowed vessels, in which a blocked artery is expanded and a stent is placed to keep the vessel open after dilation. The stent is a small tubular device, usually a metal mesh or other scaffold, that may be coated with a drug or a drug-containing polymer. [0003] Although stents have been successful in treating various injuries in the vasculature, their success has been limited to the treatment of bifurcation injuries of the coronary and carotid arteries. Often, the stent mesh at the bifurcation lesion prohibits collateral access and restricts blood flow to the collateral while interfering with the flow pattern. [0004] The clinical literature describes difficulties e...
