Embodiment Construction

[0023] Figure 1 is a simplified front view of a flexographic printing station, generally designated 10, suitable for use in accordance with the present disclosure. The purpose in Figure 1 is to apply a liquid ink image to a sheet S moving in the process direction P. Although the workstation 10 is shown to apply ink of one color to the sheet S, a plurality of such stations may be positioned along the sheet path to provide sequential separation of the primary colors to form a full color image on the sheet S.

[0024] Liquid ink is supplied to the workstation 10 from an ink reservoir 12, similar to prior art types. The rubber sump cylinder 14 is partially submerged in the ink in the pan 12, also of a similar type to the prior art. Cylinder 14 supplies ink in turn to what is commonly referred to as an "applicator", such as comprising anilox cylinder 16 . Similar to prior art types, the anilox cylinder generally defines a set of small cavities in its surface to transfer liquid in...

Abstract

A system for printing comprises a rotatable charge-retentive member (20); imaging means (24) for creating an electrostatic latent image on the imaging surface; and development means (26) for applying a development material to the electrostatic latent image on the imaging surface. The developed image has a raised portion (T), suitable for transferring a liquid-ink image related to the developed image to a receiving surface. The system can be fitted into a flexographic printing apparatus.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to adaptive printing techniques that are not traditionally compatible with receiving digital image data for digital printing, such as flexographic printing. Background technique [0002] Since the invention of the printing press, several basic techniques for applying ink in image-wise form to printing paper have been proposed and implemented. In one approach, a printing "plate" (which may also be a belt or other member) defines a surface having raised portions corresponding to the image desired to be printed. Liquid ink is applied to the raised portion, and then, mostly in the form of a rubber stamp, the plate is pressed against the paper to receive the inked image. One technique currently using the concept is called "flexo printing", so called because the plate is usually in the form of a flexible plastic sheet with image-forming raised portions. While one plate can place the same image in an essentially unlimited numb...
