An apparatus for providing a printed and textured web substrate is disclosed. The apparatus has a printing apparatus and an apparatus for imparting elastic-like behavior. The printing apparatus has at least one rotatable ink roller for transferring an ink to the web substrate. The apparatus for imparting elastic-like behavior has a pair of intermeshing rollers capable of providing at least a portion of the web substrate with an elastic-like behavior.

Intaglio printing methods and apparatuses are disclosed, involving the use of a curable resin composition (e.g., curable by actinic radiation). The composition may be applied to a substrate, such as a printable material, at a depth of 250 μm or more, in order to create a desirable, three-dimensional effect. The present invention includes bainitic steel doctor blades, bainitic steel coating blades, bainitic steel creping blades and bainitic steel rule die knives used in gravure printing, flexographic printing, paper making, die cutting of materials including paper, plastic, foam, leather, etc. Other uses include printing processes such as pad printing and electrostatic printing. The process of the present invention comprises the steps of annealing a carbon steel resulting in a microstructure of the steel having a dispersion of carbides in a ferritic matrix; cold rolling the annealed steel; cleaning the cold rolled steel to remove oil and dirt; bridle braking the cleaned steel to increase strip tension; austenitizing the steel; submersing the austenitized steel into a quenchant; removing excess quenchant; and isothermally transforming the austenitized steel into bainite. The present process of the invention also includes the use of turn rolls that are housed in an assembly containing salt and/or tin.

Disclosed is a surface treated doctor blade in which the surface of at least the blade edge portion thereof consists of a surface treatment coating film composed of a first layer consisting of a specific nickel-based plating and a second layer provided thereon which has low surface energy, and in which preferably at least a part of the blade edge end portion of the blade base material is exposed. In the surface treated doctor blade of the present invention, it is possible to improve wear resistance of the blade edge end and to suppress generation of printing failures during continuous printing. Further, in the mode in which at least a part of the blade base material is exposed, it is possible to reduce running-in time for adjustment of contact of the blade edge with the cylinder after replacement of the doctor blade.

A curved surface body printed by this method is also disclosed.

A method of fabricating a color filter in a liquid crystal display device includes providing a plurality of clichés in which grooves are formed, filling color inks and a black resin in the grooves of the clichés, applying the color inks in the clichés onto a substrate to form a color filter, and applying a black resin in one of the clichés onto the color filter. The color inks and black resin are transferred to the clichés from an ink supply container via an ink supplying roller and from the clichés to the substrate via a printing roller.

A variable cut-off offset press system and method of operation which utilizes a continuous image transfer belt is provided. The offset printing system comprises at least two plate cylinders adapted to have thereon respective printing sleeves. Each of the printing sleeves is adapted to receive colored ink from a respective ink source. An optional coating source may be provided to fully or partially coat the image transfer belt before inking. A process for printing a web substrate in contacting engagement with an external surface of a central roll of a contact printing system is disclosed. The process comprises the steps of: a) providing the central roll with a plurality of discrete cells disposed upon an outer surface thereof; b) contactingly engaging at least two primary fluids internal to the central roll to form a first secondary fluid; c) fluidically displacing the first secondary fluid into a first portion of the plurality of discrete cells from a position internal to the central roll; and, d) displacing the first secondary fluid from each of the first portion of discrete cells onto the web substrate.

A method for marking a side of a straight-sided chip with a decoration by pad printing. The method comprises providing an ink plate with an image defined by radially deformed representation of the decoration of the straight side of the chip in a ring-shaped zone, moving a pad coaxially into contact with the ink plate such that the image transfers to the pad, and moving the pad coaxially into contact with the chip such that the image transfers to the side of the chip.

A security document or other device including a substrate (2), a smooth highly reflective layer (1) applied thereto and having a reflectivity of at least 60 gloss units, and a raised printed image (3) applied to said reflective layer by a printing process such as the gravure process, the raised printed image having a height of at least 10 microns and being printed using a translucent ink having a large value of 85 to 95 as measured on an XL 211 Hazegard haze measuring instrument, which render it substantially transparent or translucent while causing scattering of the light reflectance and transmittance in at least a partially specular manner. To adjust peripheral register of engraved cylinders, the positions of a respective angular register mark arranged on each cylinder is measured with respect to a zero reference, and an angular printing mark characteristic of the position of the engraving is associated with each cylinder. The data of the job to be run are stored. The respective angular displacements of the engraved cylinders are indexed with respect to a reference cylinder in accordance with the job. By determining the web length separating two printing points of two successive engraved cylinders, this length is divided by the peripheral length of the cylinder and the remaining amount of the division is used for determining the angular indexing. Each cylinder is then brought into its angular indexed position, is first disconnected from a common transmission, and then all the cylinders are simultaneously reconnected to the transmission.

The present invention relates to using soft secondary plates and specialty inks in a printing process. More specifically, the present invention relates to an apparatus and methods of using soft secondary plates made of a rubber comprising a saturated chain of polymethylene or a photopolymer material to decorate an exterior surface of cylindrical metallic containers with high definition graphics and other indicia.

A method for producing a security document having printed image 1 produced by steel intaglio printing and embossed microstructures 2 of an order of magnitude of less than 100 microns is carried out by one printing plate 8 on which both the steel intaglio structures and the microstructures are present. The parts of the microstructures closest to printing plate surface 9 are located 20 to 100 microns below the printing plate surface so that they are not touched and destroyed by the wiping cylinder. Alternative methods for producing a steel intaglio printing plate with integrated microstructures are provided. The microstructures can be used for embossing a diffractive relief or a blind embossing.

There is described process for producing security papers, in particular banknotes, comprising the step of sealing the surface of the security papers by applying a protective pattern on the surface of the security paper, which sealing comprising printing the security papers by intaglio printing using an intaglio printing plate with engraved areas such that at least 80% of the whole surface of each security paper is covered with embossed intaglio patterns produced by engraved areas of the intaglio printing plate which are inked or with a combination of embossed intaglio patterns and flat intaglio patterns, which flat intaglio patterns are produced by unengraved areas of the intaglio printing plate which are inked after wiping of the intaglio printing plate, at least a part of the embossed intaglio patterns and/or flat intaglio patterns being printed with a transparent or semi-transparent intaglio ink. The transparent or semi-transparent intaglio ink is applied in engraved areas and/or unengraved areas of the intaglio printing plate so as to seal substantially the whole surface of the security papers with a protective pattern composed of intaglio patterns. Also described are intaglio printing presses for implementing the said process and the resulting security papers.
