[0027] The invention described herein is the result of earlier work by the inventors described in US Patent 6,101,952, the teachings of which are incorporated herein by reference. The designs discussed therein have been used successfully in commercial applications, but improvements for lower complexity and cost are always needed. As will be appreciated from the discussion below, the magnetic switches discussed in said patent are modified herein to work with a variety of levitation and guidance schemes and use electromagnets on the rails to create controllable forces on the vehicle , thereby forcing vehicles to travel in the specified direction at bifurcations and safely maneuver at merging.
