Embodiment Construction

[0027] figure 1One embodiment of a hearing aid device 10 for enhancing the hearing of a hearing-impaired person is described. figure 1 The device 10 in may also be referred to herein as a hearing aid. Another embodiment of a hearing aid is a tinnitus masker, such as Image 6 , which will be described in detail later.

[0028] Such as figure 1 As shown, the hearing aid device 10 includes one or more microphones 12a-b for sensing sound and converting the sound into an analog audio signal. Analog audio signals produced by microphones 12a-b are converted to digital audio signals by analog / digital converters 14a-14b. The digital audio signals are processed by the digital processor 16 such that the frequency envelope of the digital audio signals is shaped to enhance the intensity of these signals in a manner that improves the audibility of the wearer of the hearing aid device. Further discussion of the various procedures for processing digital audio signals by processor 16 is p...

Abstract

A programmable apparatus improves perception of sound by a person. The apparatus includes a processor, digital-to-analog converter, audio output section and means for generating first and second control signals. The processor executes one or more available programs for processing digital audio signals based on control signals. The digital-to-analog converter generates output analog audio signals based on the digital audio signals. The audio output section receives and amplifies the output analog audio signals, generates audible sound based thereon and provides the audible sound to the person. The memory stores programs for processing the digital audio signals. Based on an action by the person, a first control signal is generated which causes the processor to switch from one available program to another available program so that the person may cycle through and evaluate each of the available programs. Also based on an action by the person, a second control signal is generated which causes the processor to designate at least one of the available programs as a chosen program for continued use. The apparatus may include a counter that counts the number of times that power is applied to or removed from the apparatus. After a predetermined elapsed time, the processor determines which of the available programs has been used most in processing the digital audio signals, where the determination of elapsed time is based at least in part on the counter value.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the field of hearing assistive devices, and more particularly, the present invention relates to a system for programming the operation of a hearing assistive device according to a patient's usage habits of the device. Background technique [0002] The type and severity of hearing loss varies greatly from patient to patient. Therefore, the acoustical characteristics of the hearing aid must be selected in order to provide the best results for each hearing impaired individual. Typically, the acoustic characteristics of these hearing aids are adapted to the patient after a prescribed course of treatment. Generally, there is a close relationship between measuring a patient's auditory characteristic and calculating the gain characteristic based on the measured auditory characteristic. The desired gain characteristics are then programmed into the hearing aid's digital signal processor, the hearing aid is worn by the patient,...
