Embodiment Construction

[0026] The present invention relates generally to a captive or retaining shoulder bolt fastener for use in automotive engine applications, and more particularly to a fastener retaining feature integral with a nylon or other polymer chain guide or tensioning arm device or equipment.

[0027] figure 1 A chain tensioner arm 10 is illustrated including a chain guide member 16 connected to the chain tensioner arm, and a fastener such as a shoulder bolt 12 engaging the chain tensioner arm to define the tensioner arm assembly TA. exist figure 1 In FIG. 1 , a portion of the tensioning arm 10 is cut away to reveal its engagement with the shoulder bolt 12 . Shoulder bolts 12 or other fasteners are used to secure the tensioning arm 10 to the engine block (not shown) while allowing pivotal or rotational movement of the tensioning arm about a pivot axis X. also refer to figure 2 , figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of the tensioning arm 10 with a shoulder bolt 12 received in a cylin...

Abstract

A fixed or adjustable chain guide includes captive shoulder bolt fasteners. An adjustable chain guide, such as a chain tensioner arm assembly (TA), includes a tensioner arm (10) having a pivot hole defined about a pivot axis (x). The pivot hole includes an inner end that opens through the rear surface of the tensioning arm and an outer end that opens through the front surface of the tensioning arm. The tension arm also includes at least one resilient fastener retaining tab located adjacent the pivot hole (14). A shoulder bolt (12) extends through the pivot hole and is engaged by at least one resilient fastener retaining tab (20) which inhibits separation of the fastener from the tensioning arm. The fastener preferably includes an annular groove or other recess to be engaged by one or more fastener retention tabs, thereby allowing the tensioning arm to rotate relative to the fastener. Also defined are new shoulder bolt fasteners, each comprising a shoulder region (12c) having at least one retaining feature, such as an annular groove (12g), adapted for use by an associated component. The protrusions engage for axially tethering the fastener to the associated component while allowing rotation of the associated component relative to the fastener.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority and benefit from the filing date of U.S. Provisional Application Serial No. 61 / 019693, filed January 8, 2008, which prior U.S. Provisional Application Serial No. 61 / 019693 is expressly incorporated into this application by reference . Background technique [0003] The use of captive fasteners is known to increase productivity by reducing assembly time in the manufacturing process, such as when fastening a fixed chain guide to an engine block. Time savings are achieved by manually or using a robot to pre-attach the fasteners to the chain guide or tensioning arm for subsequent assembly and securing to the engine block. In the absence of sufficient and purposeful external force, fastener captive devices are used to hold a fastener in a desired axial position within a bore. Once the fasteners have been installed and held axially to the chain guide or tension arm, the assembly can then be tr...
