Embodiment Construction

[0021] refer to figure 1 , the driver of the vehicle can operate the vehicle from the cab 10 . The cab 10 includes a steering wheel 12 and a controller 14 . The driver can rotate the steering wheel to turn the wheels of the vehicle and steer the vehicle in a desired direction. The steering wheel may also be configured to provide the driver with messages (eg, visual messages, audible messages, etc.) regarding current vehicle state, road geometry or conditions, predicted vehicle state, or any combination thereof. The messages may be generated by the controller 14 based on data about the vehicle and the road. The message may be a warning message for excessive speed, acceleration or braking or insufficient speed, acceleration or braking or for understeering or oversteering. The message may also contain instructions on actions to be taken, such as how to negotiate or maneuver around bends, obstacles or road conditions. According to various exemplary embodiments, steering wheel...

Abstract

A steering wheel system for a vehicle includes a display and a controller. The controller receives vehicle parameters from one or more vehicle sensors as well as geometric or navigability characteristics of the road. The controller generates a prediction of an effect of the vehicle parameters on the vehicle with respect to the geometric or navigability characteristics of the road. The controller sends a signal to the display based on the prediction. The display is configured to display a representation of the prediction based on the signal received from the controller.

Description

[0001] Related Application Cross Reference [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Application Serial No. 12 / 213,591, filed June 20, 2008, which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] The present application generally relates to a system and method for providing messages to drivers of vehicles. More specifically, the present application relates to a system and method for providing warning or instructional messages to the driver of a vehicle. Background technique [0004] Conventional vehicle navigation systems employ various displays to inform the driver of the next navigation event (eg, a maneuver or turn) and the distance to that event. Events are typically represented as simple icons representing the geometry of the next steering maneuver for an example left turn, right turn, merge, etc. Conventionally, there are only a limited number of icons to represent each real world maneuvering situation. Driver navigation based ...
