Abstract

Methods and apparatus are provided for texture compression utilizing block tile-based sampled texture synthesis. An apparatus includes an encoder for encoding a texture of a picture by synthesizing the texture. The encoder utilizes a tile-based sampling method to perform texture synthesis, thereby determining a "displacement vector" that indicates the location of the tile in the input sample texture to be synthesized. At the encoder, both the input sample texture and the information representing the "displacement vector" are encoded. At the decoder, new tiles are generated by directly utilizing the "displacement vector".
