Similarly, for a predetermined output vibration frequency, there will be differences in the viscosity level of the composite material depending on how deeply the instrument tip is inserted into the composite material, which can also lead to adhesion of parts of the material with a specific viscosity level

Embodiment Construction

[0022] With reference to the accompanying drawings, and specifically to Figure 1 to Figure 3 as well as Figure 3A , showing an exemplary dental instrument in the form of an applicator 10 for applying a dental composite 12 to a tooth 14, where the term "applying" generally includes shaping the dental composite 12, applying it evenly, or Other treatments go to the teeth 14 . The applicator 10 includes an elongated body 16 defining a handle of the applicator 10 and extending generally along a longitudinal axis 18 . Tip 20 is coupled to the longitudinal end of elongated body 16 and is configured to apply composite material 12 to tooth 14 during vibration of tip 20 . To this end, tip 20 may take one of several different forms. For example, and without limitation, tip 20 may have a generally spherical ( figure 1 , figure 2 and Figure 4 ), regular conical, regular cylindrical, or any other suitably selected shape of the working end.

Abstract

The invention relates to a dental composite applicator and related methods. The vibrating applicator is provided for applying a dental composite material onto a tooth. The applicator has an elongated body and a tip that is coupled to the elongated body to apply the dental composite material onto the tooth. The applicator further has a vibrating apparatus for vibrating the tip and a sensor for sensing a condition of the dental composite material. A controller is operatively coupled to the vibrating apparatus and to the sensor and is configured to automatically vary an output frequency of the vibrating apparatus in response to the condition sensed by the sensor.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to dental instruments, and more particularly to vibrating applicators for applying dental composites to teeth. Background technique [0002] Apparatus for applying dental composites to teeth are known. But one drawback of composite materials is that they tend to adhere to a greater or lesser extent to the device used to apply or shape them. Thus (by way of example) the composite material has a tendency to detach from the cavity edges, to distribute non-uniformly onto the tooth surface and to form air bubbles during distribution. [0003] To this end, devices have been developed that overcome challenging deficiencies that arise in applying composite materials. For example, known instruments may include on the working end of the instrument such as TiN, or Teflon TM coating to minimize the tendency of the composite to adhere to the ends. Other instruments may include vibrating tips. But in this type of instrume...
