Problems solved by technology

Therefore, traditional technologies cannot fully consider the mobility of mobile devices
According to another example, if a mobile device ignores a femtocell base station (e.g., refrains from switching from a macrocell base station to a femtocell base station, etc.), various problems can result, such as dropped calls, lost pages, etc.

Embodiment Construction

[0033] Various embodiments are now described with reference to the figures. In the following description, for purposes of explanation, numerous specific details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of one or more embodiments. It may be evident, however, that the described embodiments may be practiced without these specific details.

[0034] As used in this application, "component", "module", "system" and the like are meant to include computer-related entities such as, but not limited to, hardware, firmware, a combination of hardware and software, software, or software in execution. For example, a component may be, but is not limited to being limited to being, a process running on a processor, a processor, an object, an executable, a thread of execution, a program, and / or a computer. By way of example, both an application running on a computing device and a computing device can be a component. One or more components can reside within a process and / or thr...

Abstract

The present invention describes systems and methods that facilitate performing idle handoffs in a wireless communications environment. The signal quality of pilots received from base stations can be measured; the type of base station from which the pilots were received can be identified (eg, femto, macro, etc.). According to an example, when the type of base station is identified as a femtocell base station, the base station may be identified as preferred or non-preferred. Additionally, a stall timer may be started when the signal quality of the pilot exceeds an entry threshold and the base station is identified as a femtocell base station. Furthermore, an idle handover to the base station is performed upon expiration of the hold-off timer based on at least one subsequent measurement of signal quality of a pilot received from the base station.

Description

[0001] Claiming Priority Based on 35 U.S.C. §119 [0002] This patent application claims priority to Provisional Application No. 61 / 086,113, filed August 4, 2008, entitled "SYSTEM ANDMETHOD FOR ENHANCED IDLE HANDOFF TO SUPPORT FEMTOCELLS," which is assigned to the assignee of this application person, it is hereby expressly incorporated by reference. technical field [0003] In general, the following description relates to wireless communications, and in particular, to the use of stall timers in wireless communications environments to enhance idle handoffs implemented by mobile devices. Background technique [0004] Wireless communication systems are widely deployed in order to provide various types of communication content such as voice, data, and so on. A typical wireless data system may be a multiple-access system capable of supporting communication with multiple users by sharing available system resources (eg, bandwidth, transmit power). Examples of such multiple-access...
