Problems solved by technology

Collectively, these solids are commonly referred to as "sand," and such materials can cause problems such as reduced recovery efficiency, increased production costs, and wear and / or damage to downhole and surface components
Many screening techniques are inefficient and low yielding, especially in applications where the wellbore is not uniform and the formation produces large amounts of sand during hydrocarbon exploration operations

Embodiment Construction

[0012] refer to figure 1 , shows an exemplary embodiment of a screen unit 10 in a wellbore. As used herein, "screen" or "screen unit" means any element and element that is placed in a wellbore to filter unwanted particles and other solids from formation fluids as they enter the production tubing string and / or system. The screen pipe unit 10 includes a central pipe 12 , a foam layer 14 located radially outside the central pipe 12 and a cover 16 located radially outside the foam layer 14 . Foam layer 14 includes foam having a plurality of hollow structures with gaps or apertures formed therebetween.

[0013] The base pipe 12 is a tubular member made of a material such as alloy steel. In one embodiment, the base pipe 12 is part of a downhole tubular string, such as a hydrocarbon production string or a drill string. As used herein, "tubular string", "production string" or "drill string" means any structure or conveyance suitable for lowering tools or other components into a w...

Abstract

An apparatus for screening earth formation components includes: a base pipe configured to allow the passage of formation fluid therethrough; and a foam layer disposed radially outwardly of the base pipe and configured to allow the passage of formation fluid therethrough and minimize the passage of formation solids therethrough, the foam layer including a plurality of hollow structures forming windows therebetween. A method of manufacturing an apparatus for screening earth formation components is also disclosed.

Description

[0001] cross reference [0002] This application claims priority to US Nonprovisional Patent Application Serial No. 12 / 567,166, entitled "Wellbore Screening System and Apparatus Including Foam Layer," filed September 25, 2009. Background technique [0003] In the drilling and completion industries, as well as in operations such as hydrocarbon exploration and recovery, efforts are being made to improve recovery efficiency and increase production. These efforts include the use and improvement of techniques to prevent inappropriate solids from entering the production tubing. Collectively, such solids are commonly referred to as "sand," and such materials can cause problems such as reduced recovery efficiency, increased production costs, and wear and / or damage to downhole and surface components. [0004] Downhole screens, such as sand-packed or gravel-packed screens, are often used to filter the formation fluids as they enter the production string to prevent inappropriate solids ...
