Embodiment Construction

[0016] The safety systems shown in the figures are provided in vehicles in order to avoid or mitigate collisions with other road users, such as cars, trucks, motorcycles, mopeds, bicycles, pedestrians and the like. Meanwhile, as described above, the safety system is shown by a block diagram, and the vehicle is not shown in the drawings for the sake of clarity.

[0017] In its simplest form the safety system according to the invention comprises a monitoring device 1 configured to monitor a road in order to detect a relative approach of a road user to a vehicle and to provide a first signal indicative of this relative approach. The monitoring device 1 may comprise one or more sensors of a suitable type, for example one or more sensors using electromagnetic radiation. Accordingly, the one or more sensors may be radar operated sensors. The monitoring device 1 may also comprise cameras or lasers or any suitable combination of different sensors. The one or more sensors generate lo...

Abstract

The present invention relates to a safety system for avoiding or mitigating a collision with other road users. The safety system comprises a monitoring means (1) for monitoring a road for detecting the relative approach of road users to said vehicle and providing a first signal indicative thereof. The safety system also comprises first and second managing means (2, 6) which are operatively connected to the monitoring means (1) and connected in parallel for activating, in response to the first signal, active and passive safety means (4, 8) respectively. Finally, there is also a detecting means (10) for detecting a collision with another road user and providing a second signal indicative thereof. The detecting means (10) is operatively connected to the passive safety means (8) for controlling, by means of the second signal, the activation of the passive safety means. Thus, the present invention optimizes data input for passive safety functions through use of two different managing means which are optimized for passive safety functions and active safety functions respectively, in combination with a detection means to detect collision events.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a safety system in a vehicle and a method for avoiding or mitigating collisions with other road users. Background technique [0002] Automatic safety systems are generally divided into active (preventive) safety systems and passive (protective) safety systems. In view of this, the purpose of passive safety systems is to reduce the damage caused by accidents, and the purpose of active safety systems is to avoid accidents or reduce their consequences. [0003] In order to implement effective safety systems, especially active safety systems, a good understanding of the traffic situation around the vehicle is fundamentally necessary. Radar sensing technology (possibly combined with camera vision technology) is a widely used technology for detecting and tracking other road users around the vehicle and estimating road user characteristics such as position and relative speed. [0004] Active and passive safety applications typically...
