Embodiment Construction

[0037] In a generalized pulse detonation combustor, fuel and oxidant (eg, an oxygen-containing gas such as air) are introduced into an elongated detonation chamber, also referred to herein as a burner tube, at an upstream inlet end. An igniter is used to initiate the combustion process and may also be referred to as an "initiator". After a successful transition to detonation, the detonation wave propagates towards the outlet at supersonic speed, causing a substantial combustion of the fuel / air mixture before the mixture can be driven substantially from the outlet. The result of the combustion is a rapid increase in the pressure within the burner before considerable gas can escape through the burner outlet. The effect of this inertial constraint is to produce nearly constant volume combustion.

[0038] As mentioned above, the key to achieving the high pressure of combustion is the successful transition from the initial combustion as deflagration to the detonation wave. This d...

Abstract

A pulse detonation combustor (PDC) includes a combustion tube (120), an inlet (110) located on an upstream end of the combustion tube which receives a flow of a fuel / air mixture, an enhanced DDT region (160) located within the tube downstream of the inlet, a nozzle (140) disposed on a downstream end of the tube and a fortified region (210) disposed downstream of the enhanced DDT region and upstream of the nozzle. A combustion initiation system that provides multiple initiation locations at different axial stations along the length of the tube are positioned downstream of the inlet and upstream of the fortified region. The initiator system is operable to initiate combustion of a fuel-air mixture within the tube at a selected one of the initiation locations.

Description

technical field [0001] The described systems and techniques include embodiments related to techniques and systems for varying deflagration to detonation location within a pulse detonation combustor. The systems and techniques also include embodiments that involve changing the ignition point for combustion within such a combustor. Background technique [0002] With the recent development of pulse detonation combustors (PDC) and engines (PDE), various efforts have been made to use PDC / PDE in practical applications, such as for aircraft engine combustors and / or as post-turbine stage means for generating additional thrust / propulsion in the These efforts are primarily concerned with the operation of pulse detonation combustors and not with devices or other aspects of engines employing pulse detonation combustors. It should be noted that the following discussion will refer to "pulse detonation combustors" (ie, PDCs). However, use of the term is intended to include pulse detonat...
