[0037] In a generalized pulse detonation combustor, fuel and oxidant (eg, an oxygen-containing gas such as air) are introduced into an elongated detonation chamber, also referred to herein as a burner tube, at an upstream inlet end. An igniter is used to initiate the combustion process and may also be referred to as an "initiator". After a successful transition to detonation, the detonation wave propagates towards the outlet at supersonic speed, causing a substantial combustion of the fuel / air mixture before the mixture can be driven substantially from the outlet. The result of the combustion is a rapid increase in the pressure within the burner before considerable gas can escape through the burner outlet. The effect of this inertial constraint is to produce nearly constant volume combustion.
