Embodiment Construction

[0035] Embodiments of the apparatus of the present disclosure will now be described in detail with reference to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals designate like or corresponding elements in each of the several views. As used herein, the term "distal" refers to the portion of the tool or a component thereof that is away from the user, while the term "proximal" refers to the portion of the tool or component thereof that is closer to the user.

[0036] refer to figure 1 , illustrates a surgical instrument 10 according to the present disclosure. Surgical instrument 10 is an endoscopic device comprising a handle assembly 12 and an elongated body 14 extending distally therefrom. The outer diameter of the instrument can be 5mm, although other dimensions are also conceivable. The loading unit 16 is replaceable and disposable, releasably securable to the distal end of the elongate body 14 . The loading unit supports end effector assembly 40 .

Abstract

The invention discloses a tissue dissection and removal device. A surgical instrument includes a handle portion and a body portion extending distally from the handle portion and defining a longitudinal axis. The surgical instrument also includes an end effector assembly disposed at a distal end of the body portion. The end effector assembly having an elongate member has a cavity for the reception of a tissue sample therein and a closing member for securely enclosing the tissue sample within the cavity.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit and priority of US Provisional Application Serial No. 61 / 608,241, filed March 8, 2012, the entire contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference. technical field [0003] The present disclosure is generally directed to systems and methods for capturing body tissue samples. The present disclosure is particularly directed to such systems and methods with particular application to isolating, resecting, and capturing lymph nodes or other tissue. Background technique [0004] Many thoracic procedures are performed for cardiopulmonary disease, muscular and nervous disorders, ulcers, and other serious conditions. While surgery can be the best or only way to treat the disease, patients sometimes face a long and difficult recovery because traditional "open" chest surgery is extremely traumatic. In open chest surgery, known as thoracotomy, the surgeon must make a long incision throug...
