Use of photopolymerization for amplification and detection of a molecular recognition event

The invention provides methods to detect molecular recognition events. The invention also provides methods to detect the presence of or identify a target species based on its interaction with one or more probe species. The methods of the invention are based on amplification of the signal due to each molecular recognition event. The amplification is achieved through photopolymerization, with the polymer formed being associated with the molecular recognition event. In an embodiment, a fluorescent polymer, a magnetic polymer, a radioactive polymer or an electrically conducting polymer can form the basis of detection and amplification. In another embodiment, a polymer gel swollen with a fluorescent solution, a magnetic solution, a radioactive solution or an electrically conducting solution can form the basis of detection and amplification. In another embodiment, sufficient polymer forms to be detectable by visual inspection.

Cells grown on a microcarrier are separated from the microcarrier by enzymatically digesting the microcarrier. More specifically, chondrocytes may be grown on dextran microcarrier beadlets and then the beadlets digested using dextranase to separate the chondrocytes from the carrier. Cells can also be grown on chitosan microcarriers to be used for implantation. In addition, cells can be grown on polysaccharide polymers to be used as implant devices. Various polymers serve as scaffolds for cells to be used for implantation. The polymers can be used for cell culture as well as for preparing scaffolds useful for tissue replacement such as cartilage tissue.

Method for treating the prostate and inhibiting obstruction of the prostatic urethra using biodegradable stents

Methods of treating the prostate include administering a thermal ablation therapy and inhibiting the obstruction or closure of the prostatic urethral opening by forming a biodegradable stent in situ in the subject such that the stent attaches to the walls of the prostatic urethra. A related method of treating BPH includes thermally treating or ablating localized tissue in the prostate with a treatment catheter and inserting flowable stent material via the treatment catheter into the prostate (either before, during, or after the thermal treatment), forming the flowable stent material so that it defines a stent that remains in position after removal of the treatment catheter to inhibit the closure of the urinary passage. Associated stents and catheters are included.

Motor-type power device

ActiveUS20090127954A1Suppress stirring resistance of oilEnsure performanceGearboxesGear lubrication/coolingEngineeringCentrifugal force
Due to a centrifugal force in a vehicle width direction due to turning of an automobile, oil in an electric motor housing chamber housing an electric motor and oil in a transmission housing chamber housing a reduction gear and a differential gear flows to-and-fro via oil communication passages that penetrate a partitioning wall. An opening on the transmission housing chamber side of the oil communication passages is spaced from the partitioning wall. Hence, when oil moves from the transmission housing chamber side to the electric motor housing chamber side, it is possible to prevent the oil quantity on the electric motor housing chamber side from increasing excessively and suppress an increase in resistance to oil stirring by a rotor of the electric motor while retaining a constant oil amount on the transmission housing chamber side to ensure lubricating performance for the reduction gear and the differential gear.

System and method for variable price postage stamp and billing

A postal customer obtains (directly or indirectly) from a post office one or more labels, each having a unique identifier. At the time of obtaining the labels or later, the customer associates a payment account such as a credit card account or bank account with the label identifier in a database and authorizes postage charges to the payment account. At a later time, a label is addressed and other delivery information is supplied, and then affixed to a package for delivery. The package is delivered to and processed at a post office, where the label is read and the appropriate postage is determined by the post office without interaction with the customer. By accessing the database, the payment account associated with the unique identifier is determined and billed for such postage by the post office.

Device for and method of creating a model for determining relationship between process and quality

A model creating device inputs process status data that are obtained in time series during a period during which each of process steps of a process is carried out and are related to status of this process, as well as inspection result data related to object articles that were processed by said process. An extracting part extracts a characteristic quantity from the process status data for every unit object article and for every process step. An analyzing part carries out an analysis by data mining by using the characteristic quantities and inspection result data in correlation with the unit object articles and creates a process-quality model that shows a relationship between the correlated characteristic quantities and inspection result data.
