[0014] overview

[0015] Input techniques that can be used to interact with computing devices have evolved from text entry techniques, typically implemented using a keyboard, to gestures that can be captured using cameras. For example, the camera can detect the user's orientation or one or more body parts and recognize gestures based on the detected orientation. This gesture can then be used to interact with a user interface output by the computing device.

[0016] However, the environments in which such computing devices are employed can vary greatly, from well-lit environments (eg, offices) to relatively dark environments (such as those typically employed by users at home when playing video games). Therefore, configuring cameras to recognize gestures within each of these environments in a cost-effective manner is difficult because these environments can vary greatly.

[0017] However, this article describes techniques that can be used to light an environment so that a ca...

Abstract

Laser diode mode technology is described. In one or more implementations, one or more laser diodes of the computing device are caused to operate below a lasing threshold to illuminate at least a portion of the computing device's physical surroundings. One or more images of the illuminated physical surroundings are captured by a camera of the computing device, and one or more inputs are identified for interaction with a user interface displayed by the computing device based on the captured one or more images.

Description

Background technique [0001] The number of devices by which users can interact with computing devices is constantly growing. For example, interacting with computing devices was initially performed using text. Thus, users typically enter text using a keyboard and view the computing device's output, also in text. [0002] These techniques were then developed into graphical user interfaces where a user can interact with a cursor control device such as a mouse. Technology continues to evolve, and graphical user interfaces are configured to recognize gestures made by users to provide input to computing devices. For example, gestures can be used to select objects, interact with video games, and so on. However, these techniques face limitations due to the environment in which they are used, which can limit the ability to recognize input. Accordingly, these limitations can limit the number and types of inputs that a computing device can support. Contents of the invention [0003...
