Abstract

The invention discloses a built-in permanent magnet motor. Its rotor core defines a plurality of cavities and includes a magnet disposed in each cavity. Each magnet includes a cross section defining an arcuate shape with an arc center. The magnets are arranged about the axis of the pole to define a first set of magnets disposed on a first side of the axis of the pole and a second set of magnets disposed on a second side of the axis of the pole. The arc centers of each of the first set of magnets and the second set of magnets are spaced apart from each other and from the axis of the pole. Multiple magnets are arranged in multiple layers. The arc centers of each magnet in each layer are spaced from each other.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to an interior permanent magnet motor, and more particularly, to a rotor assembly for an interior permanent magnet motor. Background technique [0002] Interior permanent magnet (IPM) electric machines typically include a rotor having a plurality of magnets of alternating polarity around the periphery of the rotor. The rotor is rotatable within a stator, which typically includes multiple windings and poles of alternating polarity. [0003] IPM motors can use ferrite magnets or rare earth magnets such as NdFeB. Ferrite magnets are less expensive, but when used in a similarly configured IPM motor, yield lower performance than rare earth magnets. In order to improve the performance of IPM motors using ferrite magnets, the ferrite magnets must be buried deep within the rotor core, near the center of the rotor, so that a large amount of magnetic material must be packed into the rotor. However, when utilizing the co...
