Embodiment Construction

[0019] In a CDMA 2000 1x network, (as described in the 3GPP2CDMA specification), when a wireless communication device receives a General Page Message (GPM), it typically sends a Page Response Message (PRM) on the same channel on which the GPM was received to Send base station. The only time a previous wireless communication device could send a PRM on a channel other than the channel on which the GPM was received was if the device could perform an access entry handover (AEHO) procedure before sending the PRM. However, the network controls whether a device is allowed to perform AEHO, and in many cases the network may not allow a device to perform AEHO. Therefore, previous devices are generally not allowed to perform a switch to another channel (e.g., a better pilot channel) when processing GPM, even if there is another channel with a better signal quality, the better signal quality May indicate better network performance. If the previous device performs a switch to another cha...

Abstract

The present invention provides a method for responding to a paging message. The method may include the wireless communication device receiving a paging message on a first channel of a first network; suspending connection with a second network in response to receiving the paging message; transitioning to the first network prior to responding to the paging message and sending a response message on the second channel in response to the paging message.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments described herein relate generally to wireless communication technologies, and more particularly to responding to paging messages. Background technique [0002] Efforts are underway to develop and deploy new and improved cellular radio access technologies (RATs). For example, networks implementing Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology developed and standardized by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) are currently being deployed. LTE and other newer RATs often support faster data rates than networks utilizing legacy RATs, such as various second generation (2G) RATs and third generation (3G) RATs. [0003] However, in some deployments, LTE and other new RATs may not fully support some services that can be handled by legacy networks. Therefore, LTE networks are often co-deployed with legacy networks in overlapping areas, and wireless communication devices may transition between RATs as service or coverage may require. For example,...
