The license plate identification method comprises the following steps: obtaining a license plate image, and determining a license plate character identification result of a currently identified license plate; when the obtained license plate image satisfies a preset condition, through the license plate character identification result of the currently identified license plate and the license plate character identification result of the last already identified license plate, determining whether the currently identified license plate and the last identified license plate are similar license plates; and if the two are similar license plates, obtaining a first running locus of a corresponding vehicle of the currently identified license plate and a second running locus of a corresponding vehicle of the last identified license plate, calculating the coincidence degree of the first running locus and the second running locus, if the coincidence degree of the first running locus and the second running locus is smaller than a certain threshold, determining that the currently identified license plate and the last identified license plate are license plates of different vehicles, and otherwise, determining that they are the license plates of the same vehicle.
