Abstract

The invention provides a multi-speed transmission. A family of transmission gearing arrangements produces up to ten forward and one reverse speed ratios by selective engagement of various combinations of three or four clutches are disclosed. Each disclosed transmission includes four planetary gear sets and six clutches. . One of the shift elements may be a dog clutch. Optional passive one way brakes simplify the control.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to the field of automatic transmissions for motor vehicles. More specifically, the present disclosure relates to arrangements of gears, clutches, and interconnections in a powertrain. Background technique [0002] Many vehicles are used over a wide range of vehicle speeds, including both forward and reverse motion. However, certain types of engines can only run efficiently within a narrow rpm range. Therefore, a transmission capable of efficiently transmitting power at a plurality of gear ratios is frequently used. When the vehicle is at low speeds, the transmission typically operates at a high gear ratio, allowing the transmission to multiply engine torque for acceleration. At high vehicle speeds, the transmission operates at low gear ratios to allow engine speeds associated with quiet, fuel-efficient cruising. Typically, a transmission has a housing mounted to the vehicle's structure, an input shaft driven by the en...
