[0033] Although elements in several of the figures may be shown and described in block diagrams as discrete elements and may be referred to as "circuits," unless otherwise indicated, the elements may be in the form of analog circuits, digital circuits, or one or more microprocessors executing software instructions. One or a combination of devices to achieve. Software instructions may include digital signal processing (DSP) instructions. Operations may be performed by analog circuitry or by a microprocessor executing software that performs the mathematics or logic equivalent to analog operations. Unless otherwise indicated, the signal lines may be implemented as discrete analog or digital signal lines, as a single discrete digital signal line with appropriate signal processing to handle separate audio signal streams, or as elements of a wireless communication system. Some of these processes can be depicted in block diagrams. The activities performed in each block may be perfo...

Abstract

An RPM signal representing a current RPM of a vehicle engine is received. An instant magnitude and an instant phase are determined for each of N harmonics of a target engine sound based on the RPM signal. The instant magnitude and the instant phase are each smoothed to generate a smoothed harmonic magnitude and a smoothed harmonic phase for each of the N harmonics. A magnitude perturbation signal and a phase perturbation signal are generated for each of the N harmonics. An individual harmonic signal is also generated for each of the N harmonics based, at least in part, on the smoothed harmonic magnitude, the magnitude perturbation signal, the smoothed harmonic phase, and the phase perturbation signal. The individual harmonic signals are summed to generate an engine harmonic enhancement signal, and the engine harmonic enhancement signal is transduced to acoustic energy.

Description

Background technique [0001] The present disclosure relates to reproducing the characteristics of engine sounds in vehicles via engine harmonic enhancement. This approach can provide natural sound for applications requiring high levels of enhancement. [0002] Some known engine harmonic enhancement methods use amplitude-only harmonic generation. In some cases, an initial phase difference between harmonics is introduced. However, such methods may not be sufficient to produce natural sounds, high levels of enhancement, or be unable to reproduce specific engine sound characteristics. Contents of the invention [0003] This disclosure is based in part on the recognition that multiple harmonics (e.g., 0.5 harmonic order up to The corresponding phase of each harmonic of the 40th harmonic order). At the same time, the small changes in phase and amplitude that give the naturalness of the resulting engine sound are preserved by introducing a distortion signal during the generation...
