Problems solved by technology

These coatings (e.g. soft elastomers) have poorly defined geometries which can lead to errors in current measurements
Other disadvantages of these sensors include limited suppression of background interference, which may also lead to a decrease in the accuracy of the measured current

Embodiment Construction

[0027] Embodiments relate to coreless magnetic field current sensors, sensor systems and methods that may be placed proximate to a conductor to determine parameters of current flow in the conductor through a magnetic field induced by the current flow. In some embodiments, the sensor may be a high current sensor capable of sensing current in the range of about 1 ampere (A) to about 100 kA or more. Embodiments may include magnetoresistors and magnetoresistive sensors.

[0028] In an embodiment, the sensor system comprises a support structure comprising at least one aperture through which a conductor can be arranged, and at least two sensors and magnetic elements arranged on the support structure relative to a position axis of the conductor. In an embodiment, the magnetic element (which may be used to counteract a homogeneous interference field) is configured to apply a bias magnetic field to at least two sensors. In an embodiment, the sensor system may further comprise at least...

Abstract

The present invention relates to magnetic field current sensors, sensor systems and methods. A current sensor system for sensing current in a conductor from a magnetic field induced by the current in the conductor, comprising: a plurality (N) of magnetoresistive (MR) sensors arranged on a circle concentric to the center of the conductor and separated from each other by 360 degrees / N, wherein each MR sensor has a sensitivity plane and responds to the projection of a magnetic field in the sensitivity plane, the sensitivity planes of the plurality of MR sensors are parallel, and wherein the plurality of MR sensors arranged relative to the conductor such that the magnetic field has a non-zero component parallel to the plane of sensitivity; at least one magnetic element arranged to provide a bias field across the plurality of MR sensors; and circuitry coupled to the plurality of MR sensors for The current in the conductor is determined by combining the signals from each of the multiple MR sensors.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments relate generally to current sensors, and more particularly to coreless magnetic field sensors, systems, and methods for sensing current flow in conductors via associated magnetic fields. Background technique [0002] Sensors are currently used in a wide variety of applications and industries. The sensors may include magnetic field sensors to detect the magnetic field associated with current flowing in the conductor and infer the current based on the field measurements. Magnetic field sensors may include Hall effect sensors or magnetoresistive (MR) sensors, including common Hall plates or perpendicular Hall sensors, such as giant magnetoresistors ( GMR), tunneling magnetoresistor (TMR), anisotropic magnetoresistor (AMR) and super giant magnetoresistor (CMR). In general, MRs are devices in which electrical resistance changes in response to an applied magnetic field. [0003] Many conventional field current sensors include a magnetic core i...
