Various deployment scenarios can be supported, including a supplemental downlink mode where LTE downlink traffic can be offloaded to unlicensed spectrum. Carrier aggregation mode can be used to offload both LTE downlink and uplink traffic from licensed to unlicensed spectrum. In standalone mode, LTE downlink and uplink communications between a base station (eg, eNB) and UEs can take place in unlicensed spectrum. LTE and other base stations and UEs may support one or more of these or similar modes of operation. OFDMA communication signals may be used for LTE downlink communications in the unlicensed spectrum, while SC-FDMA communication signals may be used for LTE uplink communications in the unlicensed spectrum.
