System and method for notification of an event

A method and a system for notifying a subscriber of the occurrence of an event, which may be a messaging event, in which a message is received by a messaging service associated with the particular subscriber; or a non-messaging event, such as the occurrence of a particular stock price. For example, an e-mail message is optionally received by the mailbox of the subscriber, which is detected by the notification request sender according to the present invention. The notification request sender then prepares a notification request according to a standard network protocol, such as HTTP for example, for transmission to a notification server for the subscriber. This server parses the notification request, and notifies the subscriber with a message according to a particular messaging service, such as an SMS (short message system) message sent to a cellular telephone of the subscriber, for example. Optionally and preferably, if a plurality of such messaging systems for notifying the subscriber is available, then the notification server determines the best messaging system or systems for notifying the subscriber, for example according to the preference of the subscriber.

Enhanced email-distributed attachment storage

A sender email client, in response to a request to send an email with attachment, determines whether a recipient of the email has distributed storage separate from an incoming email server of the recipient for storing email attachments. If so, a location server is consulted for the distributed storage's network address and its availability is determined. The send request is then serviced accordingly. An email service, in response to receiving an email with attachment, determines whether a recipient of the email has distributed storage for storing email attachments. If so, its network address and availability are likewise determined. The attachments are forwarded to the recipient's distributed storage for storage, when it becomes available. An email recipient client, in response to a request to access an email attachment, retrieves the attachment from the recipient's distributed storage or the incoming email server, as appropriate.

Method of transferring messages between computer programs across a network

A method of delivering messages between application programs is provided which ensures that no messages are lost and none are delivered more than once. The method uses asynchronous message queuing. One or more queue manager programs (100) is located at each computer of a network for controlling the transmission of messages to and from that computer. Messages to be transmitted to a different queue manager are put onto special transmission queues (120). Transmission to an adjacent queue manager comprises a sending process (130) on the local queue manager (100) getting messages from a transmission queue and sending them as a batch of messages within a syncpoint-manager-controlled unit of work. A receiving process (150) on the receiving queue manager receives the messages and puts them within a second syncpoint-manager-controlled unit of work to queues (180) that are under the control of the receiving queue manager. Commitment of the batch is coordinated by the sender transmitting a request for commitment and for confirmation of commitment with the last message of the batch, commit at the sender then being triggered by the confirmation that is sent by the receiver in response to the request. The invention avoids the additional message flow that is a feature of two-phase commit procedures, avoiding the need for resource managers to synchronise with each other. It further reduces the commit flows by permitting batching of a number of messages.

Message and arrangement for provding different services in a multimedia communication system

In current multimedia communication systems using session initiation protocols such as SIP, a service change (e.g. adding a new media type to an existing multimedia conversation) entails significant delays and processor load in both clients and server. The current invention solves this by separating session signaling and media control signaling in different signaling channels (141,142) and by eliminating the need to re-establish SIP sessions for each service change. The application server (120) maintains a list of all media types supported by each multimedia client (110) involved in a multimedia conversation. Each multimedia client (110) requesting to send one or several media streams with different media types to one or several other multimedia client(s) negotiates with the application server (120) only. The inventive concept significantly reduces networks delays and speeds up the service change as perceived by the user. The invention is of interest for various multimedia conferencing applications.

Multiple simultaneous wireless connections in a wireless local area network

Multiple simultaneous associations with Wireless Access Points (WAPs) may be formed by a given wireless client to enable handoffs between the WAPs to be accelerated and, optionally, to enable both WAPs to provide simultaneous wireless services to the wireless client. Upon forming a primary association with one WAP the wireless client scans for beacon signals from other WAPs. Upon detecting another WAP, the wireless client transmits a Request To Send (RTS) message to the new WAP indicating the identity of the primary WAP. The wireless client may also identify the new WAP to the primary WAP using a RTS message. The primary and secondary WAPs exchange information so that, in the event of a handoff, the required information has already been shared with the new WAP. Optionally, the several WAPs may provide simultaneous service to the wireless client.
