[0024] The successful projection of the properties of voltage and current signals from before to after the onset of a disturbance in an electrical network depends largely on an accurate assessment of the frequency of the signals. This is because the projected phase should be correctly represented with respect to the actual voltage and current signals after the disturbance. In the case of small disturbances, the accuracy of the frequency assessment for the entire period of interest is critical. The period of interest is the entire period of time for which failure-level results are expected. The period of interest therefore begins at the onset of the disturbance and proceeds until after the last moment when fault level results are expected. This can be 90 ms or more after the onset of interference. The disturbance itself typically includes transients, which may be steep, and which may or may not subsequently collapse to nothing in less than the period of interest.
