Problems solved by technology

[0002] Currently existing solutions enable users to specify geofences for points of interest (such as around home, work, etc.); however, these solutions are limited to a single circular fence configured with geographic coordinates (such as latitude, longitude) and radius

Embodiment Construction

[0017] The disclosed architecture enables Geofence composition and composition, where multiple related Geofences for entities such as points of interest are generated. The Geofences have varying radii relative to a particular geographic point or entity (defined by latitude / longitude coordinates) (eg, the approximate center of the entity), and represent different areas of the entity. For example, various geo-fences may be associated with corresponding modes of transportation (such as walking, biking, public transportation, driving, flying, etc.). Additionally, an entity's GeoFence may relate to respective different categories that the entity may belong to (eg, an entity may operate as a restaurant during the day and a bar at night).

[0018] The architecture also enables Geofences having shapes other than circular, such as polygonal (eg, rectangular, square, etc.). Additionally, Geofences of these different shapes can be applied to a single entity. Each Geofence in a set of G...

Abstract

Architecture that enables geofence combinations and compositions in which multiple correlated geofences are generated for an entity such as a point of interest. The geofences can have varying radii relative to a specific entity and represent distinct areas or aspects of the entity. The geofences can relate to correspondingly different categories to which the entity can belong. The geofences can be of differing shapes than circular, such as polygons (e.g., rectangles, squares, etc.). Moreover, these differently shaped geofences can be applied to a single entity. Each geofence of a geofence set associated with an entity can be assigned to represent different parts of an entity such as a part a shopping mall. The geofence composition is obtained by combining multiple primitive geofences to compose more complex geofence(s) for an entity and for embedding the relationship of the primitive geofences into the compositions.

Description

Background technique [0001] Geofences are receiving increasing attention in today's use of technology. A Geofence is a programmatically defined virtual area / perimeter around a Point of Interest (POI) that marks and encloses the POI's proximate geographic area. Typically, a Geofence is used in combination with an evaluation logic unit to identify whether a person or thing is outside the perimeter of the Geofence, touching the perimeter, or within the perimeter. For example, a user may set a reminder on the user's smartphone to buy milk while at the grocery store. The next time the user is at the grocery store, the geofence "fires" (triggers), and a notification is automatically sent to the user as a reminder to buy milk. [0002] Currently existing solutions enable users to specify geofences for points of interest (such as around home, work, etc.); however, these solutions are limited to a single circular fence configured with geographic coordinates (such as latitude, longitu...
